Discover Coleraine - Insights from a Magee Student

Recently, I had the exciting opportunity to visit the Coleraine campus at Ulster University, and I couldn't wait to share my experience with you all! As a student at the Magee campus, I was curious to explore the unique offerings of another campus within our university and see how they compare.

First Impressions

Coleraine is very different from Magee. I was immediately struck by the beautiful surroundings. The campus itself is nestled just outside of Coleraine city centre, so you're kind of out of the way from everything, but the facilities on campus definitely make up for that. With a picture perfect view of the Bann river and a modern architecture, Coleraine has a unique setting that directly contrasts Magee. The atmosphere was vibrant, with students bustling between the bridge and enjoying the social spaces available to them. It felt like a welcoming environment, perfect for fostering academic and social connections.

Campus Highlights
One of the highlights of my visit was exploring the various facilities on campus. Coleraine had an impressive library, where students were very respectful and quiet. The study room areas were great with plenty of space and great resources available to cater to different learning styles.

We also checked out the Student union which had a variety of spaces for students to socialise, alongside great sign posting, having their offices right on the Bridge and open to all students. Compared to Magee, Coleraine offers a distinct blend of facilities that serve the student body well.

My favourite location in the entire campus had to be the well-being garden. It was great to see the work the UUSU staff have been doing with it across the last few months. It had amazing views and was a great place to sit and relax.

Student Life
During my visit, it was clear to see the sense of belonging and community at Coleraine. I was particularly intrigued by the range of clubs and societies, which cater to diverse interests, making it easy for students to get involved and find their niche. There was tables all set out along the bridge and we got to see the CU society serving tea and coffee to students. Ethan Davies (Our UUSU President) was also around campus, chatting directly with students which was great to see. I loved the open plan nature of the UUSU office spaces as I think it really helped open up the UUSU to the wider student body who would pass there on their trip to class.

Student Facilities
While wandering around, I go to see the amazing car parking available on campus. The benefit of having such a wide space, Ulster University have been able to create such a massive car park that still had spaces available when we arrived at 12pm, which would be unheard of at Magee.

The Student Wellbeing department was also very well decorated with a lovely office space, located directly beside the Bann View Social, offering students plenty of resources and advice. However the signposting for it was rather poor and you wouldn't find it unless you were wandering about.

Conclusion
Overall, my visit to the Coleraine campus was a rewarding experience. It gave me a fresh perspective on what Ulster University has to offer beyond my own campus.

If you’re a student considering a visit or even a prospective student, I highly recommend exploring other campuses within Ulster University. Each one has its unique charm and opportunities waiting to be discovered. When traveling across campus' remember to use your YLink card to help you have money on your travels. I would also recommend using the Translink Journey planner!

I’d love to hear about your own experiences—have you visited any other campuses, or do you have plans to do so?
