The Role of Student Advocacy: Making a Difference in University Policy

One of the most powerful aspects of the Ulster University Students' Union (UUSU) is its commitment to advocacy. The UUSU doesn’t just focus on organising events or creating social opportunities; it plays a critical role in ensuring students' voices are heard and that their needs are represented at all levels of university decision-making. Being involved in student advocacy has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my university experience, and I’ve learned that influencing policy is key to creating lasting, positive change on campus.

Why Student Advocacy Matters

At its core, student advocacy is about ensuring that the policies and practices within the university serve the best interests of students. Universities are large institutions with many moving parts, and it’s easy for student concerns to get lost among other priorities. The Students' Union exists to bridge that gap, giving students a platform to voice their concerns and actively participate in shaping their educational environment.

Advocacy plays a vital role in building a strong, inclusive campus community. When students know they are being heard and that their concerns are being addressed, it fosters a sense of belonging and trust between the student body and the university. Whether it's about academic policies, mental health support, or campus facilities, effective advocacy leads to an environment where students feel valued and empowered.

Advocating for Mental Health

During my time with the Students' Union, I’ve had the privilege of being involved in several advocacy initiatives aimed at influencing university policies. One of the key areas addressed by the UUSU has been the improvement of mental health resources on campus. Mental health has become a growing concern for many students, especially with the increased pressures of academic life and the challenges of the current economic recession. Many students felt that the available support services were not adequately meeting their needs.

In 2021 (following the covid-19 pandemic), UUSU was awarded funding from the Department for the Economy (DfE) to create a program to support student mental health and well-being following the return to in-person teaching and campus life. Through this, the UUSU conducted a series of initiatives and events under the themes of represent, support, engage and connect. They recognised the need to respond to the current issues faced by students and have plans to release a new action plan that will run from 2024-2025, to deal with the concerns that students have within the university itself.

“We will represent our members and ensure that their voice is amplified, and we will not shy away from any difficult conversations presented; we will be inclusive and work to improve the experience of all students; we will provide opportunities to help students adapt to, and benefit from university life; and we will be ambitious in our plans to affect important and beneficial change.” (UUSU, 2024)

Building a More Inclusive Learning Environment

Another important advocacy initiative by the UUSU is their focus on creating an inclusive environment at the University. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) sits at the heart of what the UUSU does for students. Education is for everyone and the student’s union works to break down any barriers that may stand in the way of the student experience being the best that it can be.

EDI focuses on:

  1. Building communities on campus
  2. Disability Rights
  3. International Students
  4. LGBT+
  5. Stopping Spiking
  6. Irish Language
The UUSU works to ensure that students are able to achieve the same learning experience and offers a supportive and accessible environment for all students within the university.

The Importance of Collaboration in Advocacy

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned through my involvement in student advocacy is the importance of collaboration. Effective advocacy isn’t about working in isolation; it requires building strong relationships with university administrators, faculty, and students. The Students' Union serves as the link between these groups, facilitating dialogue and ensuring that student concerns are communicated in a way that leads to constructive change.

The UUSU ensures this by keeping an open dialogue with student representatives and officers, allowing us to bounce ideas off of one another and ensure that we are able to find the best and most practical solution for any issues faced by students.

Advocacy as a Tool for Empowerment

Ultimately, student advocacy is about empowerment. It gives students the opportunity to shape their own university experience and ensures that their voices are not only heard but also acted upon. Through advocacy, students can influence decisions that affect their education, their well-being, and their future. It fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among students, encouraging them to take an active role in their own learning environment.

Being involved in the advocacy work of the Students' Union has not only strengthened my leadership skills but has also taught me the value of persistence and collaboration in achieving meaningful change. Whether it’s pushing for better mental health support, advocating for more inclusive policies, or improving campus facilities, the impact of student advocacy cannot be underestimated.

Conclusion

Student advocacy is an essential component of creating a vibrant, supportive, and inclusive campus community. The UUSU plays a crucial role in ensuring that students' rights and concerns are represented at all levels of university governance. Through my involvement in various advocacy initiatives, I’ve seen first-hand how collective action can influence policy and make a tangible difference in students' lives.

As I continue my journey in leadership and advocacy, I’m more committed than ever to the idea that when students come together with a shared purpose, they can drive meaningful change that benefits not just themselves, but the entire university community.
