Empowering Women at Ulster: UUSU’s New Women’s Empowerment Committee

 At Ulster University, fostering an inclusive environment means continually championing diversity and representation across all student activities. With this mission in mind, Ulster University Students’ Union (UUSU) recently launched its Women’s Empowerment Committee, a dedicated initiative to support, inspire, and empower women across all campuses.

The Women’s Empowerment Committee is more than just a group – it’s a movement committed to advocating for gender equality and providing a safe space where issues impacting women are discussed openly, with tangible plans for change. The committee aims to offers a forum for women to connect, share their stories, and collectively work towards a fairer and more supportive university experience.

Rallying for Change: UUSU’s Participation in Recent Protests

Two weeks ago, members of the committee were present at two significant rallies advocating for women's rights. On Wednesday, they joined activists in Belfast, standing in solidarity with others across Northern Ireland. Just two days later, the committee participated in a similar event in Derry/Londonderry. Both brought widespread media attention, underscoring the importance of ongoing efforts to address gender equality issues and empowering women to claim their space confidently.

Their participation amplifies the message that gender equality requires a continuous, collective voice, especially in academic spaces that shape the future leaders of society.

Empowerment on Campus: The Role of the Women’s Empowerment Committee

Through this committee, UUSU is tackling issues such as gender-based violence, equal representation, and support for women in leadership. These efforts are not just about making changes on campus but about giving students tools and experiences that shape their perspectives and passions. With a strong support network, students are more empowered to address issues affecting their lives directly, creating a culture that values respect, equality, and shared goals.

Recently, I had the exciting opportunity to visit the Coleraine campus at Ulster University, and I couldn't wait to share my experience with you all! As a student at the Magee campus, I was curious to explore the unique offerings of another campus within our university and see how they compare.  First Impressions Coleraine is very different from Magee. I was immediately struck by the beautiful surroundings. The campus itself is nestled just outside of Coleraine city centre, so you're kind of out of the way from everything, but the facilities on campus definitely make up for that.
