Green Week at Ulster University: Taking Steps Toward a Sustainable Campus

As a student, finding ways to positively impact our environment can feel challenging, but Green Week at Ulster University gives us all a chance to make small, impactful changes. This week, the Ulster University Students’ Union (UUSU) is hosting a variety of activities aimed at promoting sustainability, sparking environmental awareness, and inspiring students and staff alike to adopt greener practices.

Events for Green Week

UUSU Green week Calendar

This year, UUSU has pulled together a series of engaging events designed to both educate and inspire:

  • Sustainability Workshops: These interactive sessions cover practical tips on waste reduction, sustainable shopping, and eco-friendly living. From hands-on DIY projects to expert talks, these workshops are a great way to gain new skills while learning about environmental conservation.

  • Campus Spinathon: Students and staff are coming together to try to cycle 49km to promote the need for change. By 2032, energy related emissions in Northern Ireland are expected to decrease by 49%.
  • Recycling and Upcycling Initiatives: Many events focus on how we can repurpose everyday items to reduce waste. Recycling competitions, creative upcycling projects, and donation drives encourage us to think differently about what we consume and discard.

Why Green Week Matters

Green Week isn’t just about events; it’s about fostering a culture of sustainability across our university. These activities promote a collective effort to make a difference, whether through recycling, reducing energy use, or supporting eco-conscious brands. For students, Green Week is an opportunity to discover that sustainability doesn’t have to be daunting—it’s about small choices that add up over time.

Getting Involved Beyond Green Week

Green Week is a great starting point, but the mission for a sustainable campus doesn’t end here. Volunteering for UUSU’s Sustainability Society, joining environmental campaigns, and even advocating for eco-friendly policies on campus are ways to keep the momentum going year-round. By getting involved in the Students’ Union, we can push for a greener university experience for ourselves and future students.

Final Thoughts

Green Week is a reminder that each of us can play a role in creating a sustainable future. Whether it's a clean-up, a recycling session, or simply learning more about the environmental impact of our daily choices, Green Week provides the perfect opportunity to make a difference on our campus and beyond.
