Supporting Men’s Mental Health this Movember: How Students Can Get Involved

Movember is more than just growing a moustache; it’s a global movement dedicated to raising awareness around men’s health, particularly mental health, prostate cancer, and suicide prevention. As students, we’re in a unique position to contribute to this cause. In this post, I’ll share why Movember is so important, how it resonates with student life, and ways to make a difference on campus.

Understanding the Importance of Men’s Mental Health
Statistics show that men, particularly young men, face significant mental health challenges but are often less likely to seek help. Many students may experience these struggles but feel unsure of how to address or discuss them. Movember provides an opportunity to break down these barriers and create a more supportive environment for male students.

How Students Can Support the Cause

  • Organise Campus Events: Suggest ideas for events that focus on mental health awareness, such as talks, panel discussions with mental health professionals, or workshops.
  • Grow a Mo, Start a Conversation: The classic Movember moustache helps start conversations. Encourage friends and classmates to join the movement and use the moustache as a conversation starter.
  • Fundraise for a Cause: Many Movember events allow participants to fundraise. Consider setting up a team with friends, classmates, or your student society to raise funds for men’s health organisations. You can get involved with the UUM Student League charity match, taking place on the 19th November.
  • Donate to the UUSU Movember Campaign - This year UUSU's Movember Campaign aims to raise as much awareness and money for Movember as possible, through numerous events throughout November.

Simple Ways to Support Mental Health All Year
Share tips that students can apply to their everyday lives, like encouraging open discussions, checking in with friends, or joining UUSU initiatives related to mental health.

Conclusion
Movember isn’t just about one month; it’s about promoting a culture where men feel comfortable seeking help and discussing mental health. Together, we can use this month to foster awareness and start making lasting change for men’s health on campus.
