Supporting Men’s Mental Health this Movember: How Students Can Get Involved

Image
Movember is more than just growing a moustache; it’s a global movement dedicated to raising awareness around men’s health, particularly mental health, prostate cancer, and suicide prevention. As students, we’re in a unique position to contribute to this cause. In this post, I’ll share why Movember is so important, how it resonates with student life, and ways to make a difference on campus. Understanding the Importance of Men’s Mental Health Statistics show that men, particularly young men, face significant mental health challenges but are often less likely to seek help. Many students may experience these struggles but feel unsure of how to address or discuss them. Movember provides an opportunity to break down these barriers and create a more supportive environment for male students. How Students Can Support the Cause Organise Campus Events : Suggest ideas for events that focus on mental health awareness, such as talks, panel discussions with mental health professionals, or workshops. ...

Halloween Night in Derry as a Student

Image
Derry during Halloween is an experience that’s hard to match. The city really gets into the spirit, and as a student at Ulster University, joining the festivities was a great way to unwind and have a memorable night with friends. This year, we decided to dive into the main events, starting with the parade and ending with some downtime at the Bentley Bar. The night started off with the Halloween parade at 7 PM. We found a good spot, and the atmosphere was buzzing with energy. The costumes were impressive, from spooky to creative, and you could tell people put a lot of effort into it. Watching the floats and listening to the music brought everyone into the Halloween spirit without being overwhelming. At 8 PM, the fireworks show lit up the sky, and it was definitely a highlight. We watched from near the start of the parade, where the view was perfect because there was less of a crowd then there would've been closer to the Peace Bridge. It was great to just take it all in, snapping a f...

Discover Coleraine - Insights from a Magee Student

Image
Recently, I had the exciting opportunity to visit the Coleraine campus at Ulster University, and I couldn't wait to share my experience with you all! As a student at the Magee campus, I was curious to explore the unique offerings of another campus within our university and see how they compare.  First Impressions Coleraine is very different from Magee. I was immediately struck by the beautiful surroundings. The campus itself is nestled just outside of Coleraine city centre, so you're kind of out of the way from everything, but the facilities on campus definitely make up for that. With a picture perfect view of the Bann river and a modern architecture, Coleraine has a unique setting that directly contrasts Magee. The atmosphere was vibrant, with students bustling between the bridge and enjoying the social spaces available to them. It felt like a welcoming environment, perfect for fostering academic and social connections. Campus Highlights One of the highlights of my visit was e...

The Balancing Act: Life of a full-time Student, Department Rep and Student Councillor

Image
University life is a juggling act, and as a student, it can feel like you're wearing many hats. For me, balancing my responsibilities as a Student Councillor , a Department Representative , and a full-time Marketing student has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences. I have learnt so much about myself and my own passions and hobbies, I was able to face adversity and adapt myself in order to overcome any obstacles that came my way. The Student Councillor Role: Advocating for My Peers Being a Student Councillor is all about representing the student body and ensuring that their voices are heard. I regularly attend meetings, work with university staff, and make sure that important issues affecting students are brought to the table. It’s a role that requires diplomacy, effective communication, and time management, especially when big events or decisions come up. The weight of representing so many diverse opinions and needs is something I take seriously, and it has ...
